Department(s)
Description
This course builds on URB 625: Leadership and Management for Social Change I. It is designed to support the growth of professionals working in social change by developing their leadership and management skills. The course is intended to extend and deepen the learning objectives from URB 625, with two additional course objectives: exposure to different forms of power and long-term strategies for social change, and broadened understanding of social movement histories. We will explore these histories across issue and constituency, including but not limited to labor, racial and gender justice, disability rights, and environmental, women?s and LGBTQ movements. We will also consider how contemporary movement leaders and earlier generations navigated questions of leadership and organizational and movement dynamics. We will take the ?30,000 foot view? that includes the international context and considers social change struggles in other parts of the world. In addition, we will examine different forms of power ? such as ideological, decision-making, and agenda-setting power ? as well as the most effective forms of power building.
