Course Title
The Power of Worker & Community Narratives
Department(s)
Description
Everything we believe -- about the economy, about cities, about people -- comes from a story we've been told. This course will teach students how communities and workers interrupt dominant narratives and create new ones that help them build power for change. Storytelling is a core function of excellent community and labor organizing, of policy advocacy, and of creating a historical record. In this class, students will be introduced to some of the best storytelling by and about workers and grassroots communities, through journalism, fiction, theater, audio and film. Students will learn how to analyze these narratives and evaluate their effectiveness; they will also prepare, individually or in groups, final projects of worker and/or community storytelling in the service of an advocacy campaign.
